Popstar of Your Dreams – Kai Bosch, EP Review

Cornish singer-songwriter Kai Bosch released his highly anticipated fourth EP, Popstar of Your Dreams, on April 16th.

The opening track, which also happens to be the EP title, kicks this four song EP off with a bang and sets its tone. With a fast-paced electronic sounding guitar and synth line, the song sounds like it could have been released in the mid 2000s by a band similar to Girls Aloud. But that is no insult to Kai at all. The lyrics are all about wanting to be a huge popstar and being well-known worldwide, as well as yearning and love, which is a common theme across the EP. A standout lyric for me in this song is “Put me in your playlist / Yeah, what’s it gonna take to make me famous?”. It’s real, it’s fun and it’s catchy.

Following on is ‘Everything is Beautiful’, which was the lead single for the EP and marked the beginning of the change in sound for Bosch’s music. This bassy, feel-good anthem is all about falling head-over-heels for someone and feeling like you have a purpose after meeting them. Between the highly melodic and infatuating lyrics, this song is one you will no doubt have stuck in your head for days on end and will be the soundtrack of this summer and for many summers yet to come.

‘Rodeo Romeo’ sounds euphoric, animated, and Bosch previously described the song as being “my crack at a Eurovision-worthy belter”. Between the energetic instrumental, the catchiness and playfulness of the lyrics and melody, the magical guitar solo and Kai’s beautiful belting, ‘Rodeo Romeo’ has it all and is solidifying his new sound. The lyrics discuss and tell a story about desperately wanting to be with someone, being intensely drawn to them but fearing the possibility of losing them one day, a highly relatable experience for many.

The final song is ‘Angel’, bringing the EP to a bit of a slower end. This ballad-esque track builds with a moody guitar riff and a dynamic synth line, yet it is still musically coherent with the rest of the EP. Between Kai’s gorgeous vocals and his impressive belting towards the end of the track, the song is nothing other than angelic, no pun intended.

The EP as a whole is beautifully written and encapsulated the feeling of love and joy as well as yearning and desire. The themes and lyrics are relatable, the tracks sound timeless and it makes for a perfect listen on a hot summer’s day or even in a club on a night out in the city.

It is clear that Kai Bosch has found his sound, and it suits his voice and style of songwriting incredibly well.
