A small zoo has opened within Cheshire with big goals to create “progressive change, driving improvement in the zoo industry”.
As climates change and habitats become destroyed it is no surprise that wildlife conservation is needed now more than ever. The 2024 living planet index report suggests a 73% average decline in wildlife populations since 1970. Wildlife conservation is extremely important as it maintains healthy ecosystems and preserves biodiversity which ensures the long-term survival of all kinds of species, including humans. There are many examples of wildlife conservation which include habitat restoration, anti poaching initiatives, establishing protected areas etc. Even local communities are getting involved.
Holmes Chapel Zoo had its grand opening on December 15th of last year. The zoo is currently quite small housing under 20 species of animals including Meerkats, Giant Tortoises, Birds of Prey and many more. The zoo offers a range of interactive experiences for all age groups within the few days they open each month. The purpose of the interactions are to educate the public about a more diverse range of animals and their habitats. Whilst the zoo is closed to the public, the zookeepers are challenged with providing the best care to the animals and also planning ways to grow and improve the zoo. Although the zoo is currently small, the staff have big plans for their future, including creating a facility where research can be undertaken, create breeding programs for conservation and set up re-introduction programs for varied species.

Small zoos as a whole play a crucial role in conservation for a number of reasons such as education and awareness, small zoos like Holmes Chapel Zoo often provide educational programs which help raise awareness about conservation issues which in turn engages the local community and can also inspire future conservationists.

The staff within the zoo are extremely keen to make a difference, “I have worked with animals my whole life and always wanted to make a difference but didn’t know how until this zoo was created! Being able to educate and raise awareness about the animals that need it is the most rewarding job, and I am extremely excited to see the changes this zoo will make in the way we support and protect our wildlife.” Said Nadia Smith, zookeeper.
Visit the Holmes Chapel zoo and learn about incredible animals, connect with nature, and protect planet’s biodiversity. Every ticket purchased supports their conservation efforts and see how you can make a real difference.
