Legally Blonde the musical review

By Preeya Abidi-Fallows

Newcastle was…..Legally Blonde on Saturday 16th of May. ‘So much better,’ …than you could ever imagine. This pink, feel-good, upbeat musical can only make you smile. The ensemble cast makes this production sparkle. Legally Blonde is touring the UK for the first time since 2017.

Amber Davies as Elle Woods is a fantastic choice. Straight from her role as Jordan Baker in The Great Gatsby on the West End to the 2026 Legally Blonde tour, the former reality tv star has proven over and over again that she was born to be on the West End. Davies stars alongside George Crawford as Emmett Forest who has also just finished a stint on Gatsby. The natural chemistry between Davies and Crawford is electric, making you believe they are truly falling in love. Karen Mavundukure plays the beloved character Paulette, her exceptional vocal range along with a  bubbly portrayal of the quirky and hilarious icon. Another exceptional performance was social media star Hannah Lowther, who plays Margot/alternate Elle Woods. Lowther gives a charming performance of Elle’s lovable bestie.

Are you ready to dress like an Ivy Leaguer?

There are only three ways to describe the set of legally blonde… pink, glittery and fabulous. From the delta nu sorority houses to the court room scenes, this musical stays consistent throughout, always retaining that sparklkng sense of the hyper-charismatic Elle Woods. A specific scene which has amazing scenery accompanies the song ‘Whipped into Shape’. The giant TV fills the stage with the incredible Jocasta Almgill makes her grand entrance.

The costumes are bright, fun and very similar to the film. They are a visual spectacle, they tell a story and go with the narrative throughout, as Elle develops from a delta Nu Queen Bee to a serious lawyer while still at Harvard University. The songs are exciting and fresh, it will have you dancing in your seat. Lot’s of movie musicals have been criticised but Legally Blonde stands on its own two feet. Despite having strong connections to the film, it has its own unique spin.

The tour is incredible and even though it is nearly halfway through, it is completely worth the watch.
