One of the most iconic films of the early 2000s, David Frankel’s The Devil Wears Prada now has a sequel. Littered with celebrities from singer Lady Gaga, Italian fashion designer Donatella Versace and Bridgerton actress Simone Ashely, to social media stars Amelia Dimoldenburg, host of Chicken Shop Date and influencer Calum Harper, it was clear that no one would dare turn down a chance to be a part of this fabulous franchise. And alongside celebrities, singers and actors, an endless list of brands were also involved with The Devil Wears Prada 2 including L’Oreal Paris, Samsung Galaxy, TRESemme and Google, just to name a few. So, my expectations of this film were understandably high.
Vlog by Isabel Bradshaw
With my ticket in hand, popcorn in the other, on its opening night on the 1st of May I excitedly went to watch this long-awaited sequel at Cheshire Oaks Vue cinema. However, I must admit that for the first fifteen minutes I was expecting another modern remake failure; too many trendy references and remarks, and that fake, shiny feel. But, as time went on and the plot thickened, it was then I realised it was indeed a success. From Emily’s fall from grace to Andy’s triumph in restoring glory to Runway, this film was packed with nostalgia, plot twists and a constant stream of well-placed references to the first. And you must admit, finally seeing Nigel gain the respect he deserved and Miranda admitting to her past mistakes, was an ending we all felt was satisfying after 20 years of wondering what happened next.
So, although this film may not be a total masterpiece, it is most definitely one that I would recommend. With its themes of personal growth, ambition and reconciliation, it was an entertaining and enjoyable watch. And no matter if you see yourself as more of an Emily or an Andy, there is something everyone can relate to.
