The 2026 Championship play-off final produced another unforgettable afternoon at Wembley as Hull City edged past Middlesbrough, 1-0, to secure promotion back to the Premier League with a dramatic late winner.
The build-up to the final had already been overshadowed by controversy. Much of the attention before kick-off centred around the league’s investigation into Southampton and the fallout that followed their removal from the play-offs. Middlesbrough were handed a place in the final at short notice, leading to fierce debate among supporters, pundits and clubs across the division. Questions were raised about fairness, preparation time and whether the situation had disrupted the integrity of the competition, adding an extra layer of tension to an already enormous occasion.
When the match finally began, both sides played with intensity and caution, fully aware of what was at stake. Hull looked dangerous whenever they attacked down the flanks, while Middlesbrough tried to dominate possession and control the rhythm of the game through midfield. Despite the fast tempo, chances were limited during a tense first half where neither side wanted to make a costly mistake.
As the game progressed, Middlesbrough started to enjoy more of the ball and forced Hull deeper into their own half. Ryan Allsop was called into action several times to keep the scores level, while Hull continued to threaten on the counterattack and through the physical presence of Oli McBurnie. The contest became increasingly scrappy and emotional as fatigue set in, and the possibility of extra time drew closer.
Then came the defining moment of the afternoon.
Deep into stoppage time, Hull launched one final attack into the Middlesbrough penalty area. The ball broke loose inside the box and McBurnie reacted quickest, calmly slotting his finish beyond the goalkeeper from close range. The Hull supporters erupted as players and staff poured onto the pitch in celebration of a goal that secured their return to the Premier League.
When the final whistle sounded, Hull City completed a remarkable promotion campaign in dramatic fashion. After all the controversy surrounding the build-up, the match itself delivered the kind of tension and late drama Wembley is famous for, with Hull emerging as the side heading back to the topflight.
