Prime Minister, Sir Kier Starmer has just announced that social media will be banned in the UK for under 16s.

This ban is hoping to come into force early 2027. Mr Starmer said: “We hope to pass regulation by Christmas, and therefore to bring the ban into force in the early part of next year”.

Included in the ban will be platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat, YouTube, Facebook, and X however, the list is still yet to be confirmed.

At today’s press conference to announce the change, the Prime Minister said it was “the right step for Britain” to keep children safe online.

The UK is following in the steps of Australia, where social media for under 16s was banned back in December 2025.

The Conversation have released an article today explaining more about the social media restrictions in Australia and how the UK can learn from this. In a study they found that 51% of those under 16 in Australia who were restricted reported a significant drop in access to news coverage.

People have already taken to social media comment sections their views. The pictures below are from the BBCs Instagram page.

Global Parenting Expert, Jo Frost commented: “Absolutely fantastic news! Our children protected and a government on the right side of history! Thank you Prime Minister, this means so much”.

Most of the comment section are also in support of this ban with many parents in favour of this step that the Government has taken.

Some people are questioning this ban and that it will restrict access to educational content and videos for young people.

In a televised statement, the Prime Minister said: “A full ban is the right choice. I am not prepared to compromise on the safety and happiness of our children.”
