Deeside Leisure Centre, which is situated in Queensferry, Flintshire, is more than simply a sports facility; it’s a thriving community hub where people of all ages gather to explore their interests, socialise and play sports. Deeside has something for everyone from its renowned ice arena to its modern gym and heated swimming pool. The vitality of Deeside Leisure Centre caught me when I initially came for an interview.
Families crowded the pool, as laughing from youngsters rang through the hallways. There were motivated athletes buzzing about the gym while the ice arena was crowded with folks gliding naturally across the surface.
My interview started with the cheerful and vivacious administrator of the institution, Sarah Williams. The centre’s goal, according to Sarah, is to give the community somewhere for physical recreation and socialisation. We welcome anyone, from novice to professional athletes.
She excitedly mentioned the ice arena’s most recent make-over. ‘We’ve just updated the ice surface and improved the seating. Our skating sessions, figure skating lessons and ice hockey games are more popular than ever.’
As I looked around the centre, I couldn’t help but think of Max from West Kirby, whom I had interviewed earlier. Max, a guy with an easy smile and boundless energy, works at a local pub in West Kirby but spends his free time playing hockey in Heswell. Despite his busy schedule, he managed to balance work and his passion for sport.
‘Hockey gives me strength,’ Max told me. ‘But this summer I’m going to Turkey to train for surfing. It’s a big change, but I love both sports.’
Max’s story is a reminder of how places like Desayde Leisure Centre can inspire people to follow their dreams, whether on ice or on waves. Sarah also believes in this transformative power: ‘We’ve seen people start here as beginners and become confident athletes. That’s what makes this place special.’
The energy at Deeside Leisure Centre was incredible, a testament to its impact on the community.
Ultimately, Deeside Leisure Centre is more than just a sports complex. It’s a place where stories are written, friendships are formed and dreams are realised.
