Host nations begin World Cup quests

by Jay Kennedy

The long-awaited summer spectacle of football is finally underway, with the host nations all hoping to raise the bar as high as they can. Mexico, USA and Canada all come into this tournament with differing form, and all hope to go as far as they can in their quest for glory. With Canada and the USA set to do battle in their respective matches in the next day, Mexico certainly got the party started.

Javier Aguirre’s Mexicans got the tournament up and running at the Azteca with a chaotic, yet entertaining 2-0 win against South Africa. Winger Julian Quinones netted the first goal of the 2026 tournament within the opening ten minutes, capitalising on a South African error. The lead was doubled through a clinical Raul Jimenez header, becoming emotional as he converted his first ever World Cup goal for El Tricolor. However, the match would be best remembered for the chaotic amount of red cards – three overall. South Africa were on the receiving end of two, with Mexico picking up the latter red card near then end of the game. This will be the start the co-hosts wanted, after being grouped in Qatar and at the 2024 Copa America.

As for Canada, they get their campaign up and running tonight in Toronto, as they take on Bosnia & Herzegovina. This is the third World Cup appearance for the Canadians, after appearing in 1986 and 2022. Under the guidance of former Leipzig and Leeds boss Jesse Marsch, they are coming off the back of an impressive run to the 2024 Copa America semi-finals. However, in a damaging blow for the Reds, skipper Alphonso Davies will miss the opener due to injury.

Last but not least, The USA begin their campaign by taking on Paraguay at the SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles at 02:00 UK time. The USA are now led by former Spurs, PSG and Chelsea head coach Mauricio Pochettino, a man with plenty of elite experience. However, despite reaching the last 16 in Qatar, the Stars and Stripes failed to make the knockouts at the 2024 Copa America, a tournament which they hosted.

As for the rest of the opposition in the groups of the host nations, they will all be staying in their homeland, which will without a doubt give them the advantage. Mexico will remain in their nation when they take on South Korea and Czech Republic. As for Canada, their additional two clashes will be against Qatar and Switzerland, in Vancouver. Following their clash against Paraguay in LA, the USA will do battle against Australia in the capital Washington DC, before returning to Los Angeles to take on the star-studded Turkey.

With the World Cup returning to the summer season, it will without a doubt be yet another spectacle of excitement. Six weeks of non-stop chaos, entertainment and countless amounts of viewer engagement. With the nations limit widened, more fans cheering on their beloved countries, a bigger stage than ever, it will surely go down in years to come as yet another wild and wonderful ride for the footballing world.
